Some Good News: Ohlone College avoids 6 staff layoffs and opts for a furlough.

AOL will reduce its staff by a third, laying off about 2,300 people…BusinessWeek is reducing its staff by 130…Fresno, CA mayor is proposing 125 municipal layoffs and 5 furlough days between New Year’s and Christmas for most other city employees… Fairfax County Public Libraries will be laying off 107 employees, including those working full- and part-time in the administration, library operations, and technical operations departments… Associated Press has laid off an additional 33 newsroom employees-resulting in 90 layoffs this week-reaching its goal of a 10 percent payroll cut…

Some Good News: Michigan State Police is recalling 55 troopers back to work.

Pacific Gas & Electric will lay off 500 employees by the end of the year, about two percent of its workforce… Boeing Co. had begun giving layoff notices to approximately 250 employees at their Global Services and Support center yesterday but it turns out that there may be job growth in the company’s future… Due to a decrease in sales tax revenue, the city of Las Vegas will lay off 19 workers… At least 13 associates have been laid off from Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP… Hudson Area Schools Board of Ed has approved an additional 3 staff layoffs… Mayor Bloomberg has not ruled out the possibility of municipal New York City layoffs to help cut down the budget… Though its layoffs were previously reported to reach up to 30 employees, game developer Krome Studios has now let go of an undisclosed amount of employees throughout its three studio locations… Duke University may need to lay off additional staff to meet the limits of its budget.

UBS anticipates slashing another 2,500 jobs in addition to large cuts the company has already made this year… Mining company Harmony Gold plans to shut down several mine shafts and reduce its workforce by 2,000 people internationally… Dell is shutting its plant in Forsyth, N.C. and eliminating 600 employees… Pennsylvania plans to lay off 319 state workers across 10 agenices due to deep budget cuts… Devon Energy Corp. was forced to lay off 275 members of its workforce after selling off assets… Deluxe Corporation will close a call center in Colorado Springs and leave all 225 employees from that location jobless… The Marine Corps Logistics Base in Yermo, Calif. will cut 170 posts… Manchester Metropolitan University in the U.K. was forced to cut 127 members of its support staff… Amway Corp. announced its plans to eliminate 93 jobs in Michigan in the next year and a half…

MTN, South Africa’s biggest mobile operator, announced plans to lay off 403 employees across all divisions… Nebraska state officials are contemplating 400 layoffs to help meet a $334 million budget cut… Fiserv will close a customer call center in Illinois and leave 290 jobless… First Data Corp. will reduce its global workforce by 250… Oklahoma state’s Board of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services voted Friday to reduce its budget by $7.3 million and eliminating 100 jobs… R-G Financial Corp. cut 100 jobs from retail banking and mortgage banking operations in Puerto Rico… Murray Energy Corp. announced the layoffs of 91 employees in Ohio… Virginia Commonwealth University plans to lay off 91 staff members after state budget cuts for education… Colorado Springs will lay off 73 transit workers by the end of the year… Lennox Hearth Products of Orange County, Calif. cut 71 workers from its payrolls last week… Wyoming school administrators proposed eliminating 57 staffers unless unions agree to a pay cut… The town of Buckeye, Ariz. anticipates cutting 40 public safety jobs in order to compensate for a budget deficit…

The good news: Iowa Gov. Chet Culver is close to formulating an agreement that may prevent 479 state government layoffs.

The bad: Hawaii state layoffs begin today and expect to effect 650 employees by the end of the year… Upwards of 500 San Francisco union workers face layoffs, pay cuts, and job reassignments… Cincinnati’s Metro has laid off 19 full- and part-time workers and will be letting go of another 101 employees, including unionized workers, part-time employees, and full-time administrators… Newsweek is planning approximately one dozen staff layoffs… Anheuser-Busch is laying off 45 hourly workers from its Manitowoc plant… Mayor Reichert of Macon, Ga. intends to layoff 31 city employees… Australian game developer Krome Studios is laying off up to 30 employees from its Brisbane studio… Santa Clara, Calif.-based factory equipment maker Applied Materials is cutting up to 12 percent of its workforce… An undeclared number of layoffs are to take place at Sinclair Tulsa Refining Co. as it merges with Holly Corp…

British lender Lloyds Banking Group will cut 5,000 jobs by the end of next year in its insurance, retail and administration departments… Adobe is laying off 680 employees, 9 percent of its workforce… Catevo Group, a PR firm in Raleigh, N.C., is closing its office Nov.13 resulting in 25 employee layoffs… The city of Plainfield, N.J. is cutting 25 unfilled municipal positions and expects more layoffs in the future… Rumored layoffs expected at Zac Posen and Gucci… Richard Petty Motor Sports has begun laying off employees.

The good news: Production is up at GM Canada which recalled 150 previously laid-off workers… A Toyota plant in Georgetown, Kent. also brought back 275 workers that had been let go last year.

Sprint announced its plans to trim its workforce by 2,500 by the end of the year… Electronic Arts will eliminate 1,500 jobs… Microsoft is scheduled to make 800 additional cuts to “adjust to economic conditions”… Pfizer sold its St. Louis operations to the Monsanto Company and expects 600 layoffs… PG&E will reduce its workforce by 500… The University of Nebraska system will be forced into 300 layoffs in response to budget cuts proposed by Governor Dave Heineman… Herbst Gaming handed out 200 pink slips after declaring bankruptcy… UniCare Life & Health Insurance will cut 187 jobs… A research subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson laid off 174 staffers in Penn. as part of a global restructuring program… Grand Rapids, Mich. is set to release a budget overhaul that calls for the elimination of up to 150 city workers… AOL will lay off 100 staff members… The Star Tribune of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn. will lose 100 workers after declaring bankruptcy…
