Love in the Time of Layoff: Two’s a Crowd

By Deborah Siegel ⋅ 10:34 am February 5, 2009 ⋅ 5 comments

coupleLast month, I was part of a dynamic duo excited about the prospect of upgrading to a two-bedroom apartment in Park Slope or Hudson Heights where I could have a little more space in which to write and we could start our family. But now, with my husband Marco newly laid off, I’m insta-primary breadwinner.

And here’s the thing. I am a card-carrying, credentialed feminist. I’m equipped to earn, and I do. So it freaks me out, a little, that I’m so freaked out about this sudden shift in our roles.

Here’s what not to wear in unemployment. Unless, of course, you plan on remaining unemployed.

Traveling Tight: Don’t Get Fleeced by Currency Conversion Fees

By Lynn Parramore ⋅ 12:15 pm February 3, 2009 ⋅ Post a comment

sheep

Money’s tight. So every penny counts when you’re on the road…

Psst. You may be incurring up to 3% in currency-conversion fees when you travel abroad every time you use your credit card. In recent years, banks have started piling fees right on top of the standard 1% fee that Visa and MasterCard charge for foreign purchases. Why? Because they think you’re too jet-lagged to notice.
