Is this the most depressing (or recessing?) story to come out about the downturn or what? We’ve all heard sad tales about lost jobs and lost homes, but Don Peck’s feature for The Atlantic is about a lost generation.
Citing a litany of statistics, studies and observations –mostly about past generations — Peck argues that this stretch of deep unemployment will shape the character of today’s young adults for the worse. They’re likely to earn less and drink more. They’ll have unstable families, which will lead to unstable communities. ”Many of today’s young adults seem tempermentally unprepared for the circumstances in which they now find themselves,” he notes. Today’s environment requires “perseverance, adaptability, humility, and entrepreneurialism,” qualities that the Millennials seem to lack.
To which I say: Eh, maybe.
I’ve done my fair share of complaining about bratty Gen-Yers. But is it too Pollyannaish to think that maybe their characters will be shaped by the better by adversity? That they will un-learn entitledness out of necessity? And that maybe their confidence and pursuit of dream careers — seen by some as frivolous — will make them enterprising rather than lazy?
You know, they might surprise us all.
I’ve always considered statements about the character of any generation to be a waste of time. Consequently, I think that projections about what a generation of younger adults may be like later in life are even more of a waste of time. Unless Don Peck has a remarkably accurate crystal ball that can show what’s ahead in the United States and the world over the next 50 years.
I am a baby boomer. Like many members of my generation, I became a radical and a political activist in the late 1960s/early 1970s. I still am and I always will be. But lots of baby boomers were NEVER part of the activism or counterculture of that era. And some who were turned into conservative Republicans who detest any positive reference to “the sixties.”
I don’t feel that the generalizations about my generation are accurate or useful.
I can’t speak for any other generation, but I’m definitely skeptical.
One more thing. As for the notion of some generation being “the worst generation ever,” I believe that generational chauvinism is just as absurd as nationalist chauvinism, male chauvinism, or any other form of chauvinism. What meaningful methodology is there for determining how an entire generation of people is “better” or “worse” than another generation? This is absurd.
How about you just be grateful that our generation is going to pay for your retirement since you outnumber us so woefully while we labor with few jobs, a terrible economy driven into the hole thanks to the uninhibited greed culture of the previous generation, and a spate of other crises that now HAVE to be dealt with in our time since they were thoughtfully left for us and no one from the previous generation wants to do anything about these things — at all.
We’ll handle it, but don’t sneer while we do it.
Funny considering that the crappy baby boomer generation that made this mess in the first place. George W. Bush and Bill Clinton are members of your pathetic generation. Spoiled by the greatest generation, its the baby boomer generation that’s the worst generation. The greatest generation pulled themselves out of the Great Depression, whats stopping us from getting through a recession? Oh right, corrupt old politicians and useless seniors that continue to be a burden for us and the next generation with their retirement.
Financial hardship can shape a better generation as evident in the greatest generation. Not spoiled pampering that created the selfish generation. Like real babies, your generation made a mess for others to clean up.
Bob, as a typical man hating boy hating sexist bigot I am guessing your boomer trash right?
My whole life growing up I heard about “male chauvinism” and that women where “oppressed”.
But the reality is I have only seen displays of female chauvinism, and have only seen and experience blatant oppression because I am a male.
You can take your ignorant ideologies and shove them. I hope your starting to look at bridges because there is no way the younger generations will pay a dime to the worst generation after you greedy blood suckers drained this nation dry.
Hah, Generation Y has it’s problems, but they aren’t the worst generation ever. That goes to Baby Boomers. Baby Boomers who have done nothing but leave this country trillions in debt, 2 wars, removed countless checks and balances in government, removed countless regulations on businesses and banks that lead to the financial crisis, continue to be brainwashed by stupid talking points from politicians, care more about their own money and their own well being instead of the country as a whole, etc. Baby Boomers, easily the WORST Generation in the history of the US, to date mind you.
I have to agree with the comments I have seen here regarding the so called “baby boomer” generation. As with most things produced in great quantity, baby boomers generally suffer from degraded quality. Boomers were handed a shining jewel of a nation and have delivered it to near ruin. Those that did not wind up as dirty stinking hippies became ignorant ideologues or worse yet, unprincipled, selfish, narcissistic, corporate pirates bent on domination. Of course there are exceptional people who deserve none of the burden of the generalities heaped upon their worthless peers but weighed in the balance of history the baby boomer generation must be found wanting for wisdom, courage, honor and human decency. The nation and much of the world lay in a shambles thanks to these people and now they place the burden of their weakness upon the shoulders of their children and grand children. They beg for government to catch them when they fall and thanks to their worthless kind manning engines of legislature some of them are raptured from the rot and ruin that they so richly deserve.
To you Baby Boomers:
Rather than castigate you and let you die wasted beneath newspapers on the street; we, your progeny, will carry you as safely as possible for the years that remain to you because you are our parents and grandparents and like those who came before you, the hardships that have shaped us have made us better, stronger and wiser. Yet, if there is any honesty within you, hang your head and know shame for you have failed this nation, this world and your children.
for the most part…Teens now days are dumbasses and grow up to be dumbasses…if you dont believe me live in an Urban setting and get the jist
I was actually reflecting on this over lunch today and I did a quick search for “Baby Boomers are the worst generation in the history of America”. Now, here I am.
I love my mother and father and I consider them somewhat of an exception to this idea, however I do not give them lineancy in their apathetic political history. The Baby Boomers lived a life of ignorance and that is probably the most apparent observation I can see from the average American Baby Boomer. This ignorance isn’t anything that will be changed either considering a majority of these hippies feed off of the mainstream media for their information.
Technologically speaking, the Baby Boomers had the TV, and we have the Internet. Our tool is FAR superior than theirs was or ever will be. They played with sticks in the swamps and we have the ability to share our ideas with people across the planet all day everyday. Yet the typical Boomer refuses to learn basic computer use. Ignorance is bliss they say. I suppose that is true given the coming economic collapse. I for one am somewhat excited with the coming opportunity to rebuild the United States, but I fear the worst. Baby Boomers across the planet are power hungery and they will jump on the opportunity to exploit weaknesses.
Ron Paul 2012.
I do not agree with this article whatsoever. It is purely based on the slippery slope theory. Have you actually been around younger people Sara or are you basing this on butt sore feelings by those who don’t bend over backwards for you? Since when do we younger people have a sense of entitledness? I love how parents get all irritated when their children ask or even demand some things here and there, yet they wonder why the hell sh*t has hit the fan here, and also when us younger people don’t hand over whatever they want. Point fingers all you want but when you need help, don’t expect us to give you a hand.
