Now’s the Time to Stock Up on Spa Services

By Sara Clemence ⋅ 2:01 pm January 6, 2010 ⋅ One comment

spa stones salt scrub 200Recessions are stressful. People are out of work or overworked, they move to smaller houses, they’re generally pissed off. But that’s no excuse for being unkempt or un-massaged—especially with the bargain prices we’re seeing at day spas these days.

Some in the spa industry claim it’s “recession-proof,” but guess what? It’s not. Plenty have gone out of business, and many are struggling to get people in the door. You can benefit from the big discounts they’re offering—sometimes more than 50 percent off. And because you can buy vouchers that last for up to a year, if you have some extra cash, you can actually stock up on 12 months worth of bargain beauty and wellness services. Here are some sources to check out:

We’ve already noted our affection for Groupon, which offers discounts in more than two dozen cities around the U.S. Sign up for their newsletter, which features a different flash discount every day. Some of their discounts are lame, but often you can get high-quality services for great prices—like, a few weeks ago, a fancy $62 mani-pedi for just $25. You have to buy by midnight of that day, and the expiration dates run from a few months to a year away.

Dealist is much like Groupon, but for New York only. Several weeks ago, the offer was a 30-minute massage, 30-minute head massage and 10-minute Ayurvedic consultation for $79. Normally the whole thing would cost more than $130.

LifeBooker is primarily a site for scheduling hair, spa and other appointments. But it also offers discounts, like right now almost half off coloring services at the Platinum Salon at the Hotel on Rivington. The discounts are for appointments you schedule, though, not vouchers for future use.

Finally, we recently learned about $25 Tuesdays, which is pretty much what it sounds like. Every Tuesday, they send you an email about a $25 service in New York. You have to snag it by the end of the day, but you can use it anytime in the next year. Yesterday’s offer was a 30-minute private acupuncture session at Gotham Wellness. Compare that to the $65 regular price. Better than getting needles stuck in your…oops, never mind.

  1. I’m a Groupon groupie, too. :-) Right now I have four massages “banked” — three cost $35 apiece and one cost $40. I have until August to use them. This will not be a problem.
I’ll eat rice and beans five times a week if it means I can have a massage every so often.
