Screwed: 270 at Hovensa

Hovensa oil refinery in the US Virgin Islands has laid off 270 contract workers… National Archiving Publishing Co. in Michigan has notified about 120 employees of impending layoffs… 95 Fox L.A. employees were given 60-day layoff notices… Gibson Guitars Inc. has laid off 50 from its Nashville offices… Winston-Salem State University is cutting 46 positions, 16 currently filled and 30 vacant… 3 officers will be laid off from the Maplewood Police Department…

thedealThere’s more bad news for bankers Monday. Financial services companies in the U.K. could cut up to 13,000 jobs in the third quarter, according to Bloomberg. Some of those layoffs include reports that the London Stock Exchange plc is laying off staff. Other reports and rumors of layoffs around the globe are said to be happening at HSBC Holdings plc (NYSE:HBC), Integra Bancorp and Voyageur Asset Management Inc.

  • The LSE will cut 60 positions in London. More layoffs are expected in Italy at the group’s Borsa Italiana unit, and layoffs are also expected as a result of the LSE dropping its TradElect electronic trading system, according to the Financial Times.
  • Integra Bancorp is cutting 65 positions in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio, according to the Evansville Courier & Press.
  • HSBC Private Banking in Singapore has axed 20 jobs. The cuts were in marketing and investments, according to AsiaOne Business.
  • Voyageur Asset Management is cutting its active U.S. large-cap and midcap growth equity strategies and laying off 30 employees, according to Pensions and Investments.

It’s a tough employment market for financial professionals, but there are jobs as companies are hiring. In fact, Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) and Macquarie Capital Advisory Opportunities are reported to be hiring. Here’s our pick of the day from The Deal’s Career Channel:

  1. i work for HOVENSA and as a fem we are forced to put up with sexual harrassment on a daily basis also forced to work in very unsafe conditions “if you want to keep your job”
