Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen proposes up to 1,051 state worker layoffs as part of his new budget… Brazilian steel maker Usiminas is laying off 1,300 employees, 516 of whom are volunteering to leave… Engineering group ABB Ltd. plans to lay off 540 workers in France… The Gary School Board has voted to lay off 110 teachers and staff… Herbert Smith lays off 84 staff employees in London… Shasta County Sheriff’s Department faces a budget deficit which resulted in the issue of 25 layoff notices and the release of 150 inmates…

thedealUnfortunately, there are more layoff announcements Tuesday. Banks that gave notice of layoffs right before the holiday weekend include Lloyds Banking Group plc (NYSE:LYG) and KeyCorp (NYSE:KEY).

  • Lloyds plans nearly 300 layoffs in its commercial banking and specialist finance operations in Scotland, according to The Herald.
  • KeyCorp announced that it will eliminate 300 jobs by June 30, according to Trading Markets.

There is good news for employees of BankUnited Financial Corp. According to Reuters, the bank has no plans for layoffs.
