Ireland’s Eircom announces 1,200 employee and contract staff layoffs… Steel maker ArcelorMittal will lay off 1,000 workers at its plant in northern Indiana. … Seagate Technoloy Inc. plans to lay off 1,100 employees, or 2.5 percent of its workforce… Legal & General is planning upwards of 500 layoffs in the UK… Fort Wayned-based scrap metal processor OmniSource Corp. has laid off 209 workers… MySpace social networking website has laid off up to 45 employees… Day Pitney LLP lets go of 20 associates and counsel…

More bad news for bankers Tuesday as layoff announcements and rumors are circulating. The latest reports include Barclays plc (NYSE:BCS), American International Group Inc. (NYSE:AIG), American Express (NYSE:AMEX) and more.

  • Barclays may lay off 700 staffers in its information technology department, according to The Register.
  • AIG’s American General Financial Services will be handing out pink slips to 140 workers in Evansville, Ind., by the end of the week, according to WTVW Fox 7.
  • American Express is closing a travel operation in High Point, N.C., where 103 employees worked, according to WRAL CBS 5.
  • Lititz, Pa.-based Susquehanna Bancshares Inc. (NASDAQ:SUSQ) will shut down six York County Pennsylvania locations. Many employees will be transferred to neighboring branches, but some could be laid off, according to Istockanalyst.

Some banks, however, are saying they done with layoffs. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE:GS), for example, will not make any more job cuts, CEO Lloyd Blankfein said at its annual shareholder’s meeting, Clusterstock reported.
