More layoff headlines from TheDeal.com

thedealUnfortunately there are more layoff reports at Capital One Financial Corp. (NYSE:COF), PNC Financial Services/National City (NYSE:PNC) and J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM). However, there is some positive news. It looks like layoffs are slowing down. According to Labor Department data, new unemployment claims declined for a fourth straight week to a seasonally 601,000 — the lowest reading since late January. An estimated 491,000 workers were laid off last month, according to ADP Employer Services Wednesday, and another employment report by Challenger, Gray and Christmas on Wednesday showed that U.S. companies planned 132,590 layoffs in April.

  • Capital One s eliminating 66 jobs in its U.S. credit card customer operations at its offices in Goochland County, Va., according to The Richmond Times-Dispatch.
  • Officials with National City said some workers have been told that they will soon be out of a job. An exact number was not provided. It is estimated that 5,800 workers will lose their jobs as PNC and National City merge operations, according to WHIOTV.com.
  • J.P. Morgan is closing its centralized check-processing operations in Miami and laying off 55 employees, effective July 2, according to the South Florida Business Journal.

It’s rough out there, but there are jobs. Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:BAC)/Merrill Lynch is apparently hiring, according to The Wall Street Journal.
