Screwed: 150 at Sierra Pacific Industries

California’s Sierra Pacific Industries sawmill lays off 150 workers as part of a series of mill closures… Wells Fargo & Co. cuts 100 positions in Florida’s former Wachovia Corp… Gentex Corp. has let go of another 28 employees… The Democrat Gazette, Arkansas’ largest daily newspaper, has laid off 16 employees… In another round of layoffs, Eaton Corp. temporarily lays off 15 employees.

thedealMore layoff were announced Monday. Economists say U.S. workers lost jobs at a devastating rate again in April, according to MarketWatch. Unfortunately, many of those jobs are in the finance industry. The most recent layoff announcements are at Wells Fargo & Co.  (NYSE:WFC), Sovereign Bancorp and Quest Capital.

  • Banco Santander SA’s U.S. unit, Sovereign Bancorp, which is expected to cut
    950 jobs across the country, will lay off 265 employees in
    Massachusetts, according to the Boston Herald. The bank also plans to eliminate 124 jobs in New Jersey, according to APP.com; 32 in Rhode Island, according to projo.com; and 24 in Staten Island, according to silive.com.
  • Wells Fargo is eliminating about 100 positions in the northeast Florida mortgage operations of the former Wachovia Corp., according to the San Francisco Business Times.
  • Canadian mortgage financier Quest Capital Corp. said it plans to cut jobs to reduce overhead costs, according to Reuters.
