Screwed: 1,600 at General Motors

General Motors Corp. announced approximately 1,600 layoffs to occur in the next few days… Liquor and wine producer Brown-Forman Corp. plans to cut 250 jobs, or 6% of its workforce… Robert Bosch automotive plant is laying off 225 South Carolina employees… In another round of layoffs, Georgia-Pacific’s Plattsburg toilet paper mill will lay off 39 workers by mid May… Calvert City, Kentuky’s Gerdau Ameristeel plant lays off 28 employees.

More bad news for professionals in the financial industry as more rounds of layoffs are reportedly underway at J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM), MassMutual, other banks and law firms that focus on the banking industry.

  • J.P. Morgan layoffs are apparently happening in Brooklyn, N.Y., Long Island, N.Y., and Phoenix, according to a source. The source said those employees that left prior to April 14 received severance based on years of service. Those employees that leave after April 14 only receive one or two months of severance with no medical.
  • MassMutual has just laid off 65 workers, with most of the layoffs occurring in its Boston office, according to Financial Planning.
  • Springfield, Mo.-based Great Southern Bancorp (NASDAQ:GSBC) will be laying off more than 50 people at failed Team Bank. Employees of the Paola, Kan.-based failed bank started receiving pink slips Thursday, according to the Fox affiliate in Kansas City, Kan.
  • United Arab Emirates firm Hadef Al Dhahiri & Associates, which has rebranded itself as Hadef & Partners, has laid off six capital markets partners working on the banking and finance team, according to The Lawyer.
