Your Mane, Your Money

By Lynn Parramore ⋅ 4:25 pm March 11, 2009 ⋅ 8 comments

Can’t afford to drop a Benjamin on your lid? Don’t despair. The Empire Beauty School, located in mid-town Manhattan near the Empire State Building, has a full-service student salon where you can tame your mane for the price of a Starbucks latte. Don’t be daunted by wigged mannequins piled helter-skelter and instructors racing around with clipboards. The students are attentive and super-friendly, if occasionally a tad over-ambitious: My ’do ended up a couple of inches shorter than I planned when I became distracted by my CrackBerry, but I ended up digging the new style. Yes, they’ll be practicing their skillz on your head, so you probably don’t want to ask for anything too crazy. And it can take a while, with instructors checking in. But the price is right, and the job is usually on the money. Call for a cut. Or start a new career in cosmetology.

What:
Wash/cut/blow-dry: $8 (add $5 for longer locks)
Deep conditioning treatment: $7

Where:

  1. Is that a photo of Veronica Lake? I can’t tell from the size . . .

  2. Yes, indeed! She had a beautiful mane, to be sure. Thanks for reading, Michael.

  3. That’s a GREAT price for the wash/cut/blowout, but it cracks me up that a deep conditioning treatment is only a dollar less! And for what? For them to slap some fancy-brand serum on your hair for 20 minutes? I used to get those treatments at my salon when I had my hair colored (at 20-bucks a pop) and then I wised up and bought Clairol Nice ‘n Easy ColourSeal Conditioner instead. For less than $4 a tube at the drugstore, I can at least 10 treatments at home, and I swear it works just as well as the salon stuff.

  4. I’ll try it! I have some seriously hard-to-manage hair so I’m always on the lookout for help (the inexpensive kind). Thanks for the tip.
