Ode to the Blingrupt

By Laura Rich ⋅ 3:08 pm March 2, 2009 ⋅ One comment

Recession Dictionary EntryTrevor Butterworth, a Wordie contributor, sent us a link to his list of economic crisis-crafted terms. And then this, a Jabberwocky rip-off, landed on our desk. (You may need to refer to his glossary of these terms to fully interpret the ode — although we bet you’ll get it, anyway. If only Lewis Carroll had provided such a thing…)

Ode to the Blingrupt

‘Twas ponzipaloosa, and the slithy brokerers

Did scofit and fraudit in the Davy Jones Index;
All bankholed were the financial sucktor,
And the drivelatives quantitatively fassets teased.

“Beware the Econorrhea, my son!
The defiscalation, the statiscry!
Beware the greenspanspin, and shun
The derolexing priaponomics!”

He took his dollardrum sword in hand:
Long time the creditastrophic foe he sought—
So rested he by the Econorrhea tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And as in stimulescent thought he stood,
The Econorrhea, with eyes of flame,
Came misundermanaged through the fiscapocalyptic wood,
And derivilified as it came!

One, two! One, two! and through and through
The dollardrum blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went coda popping back.

“And hast thou slain the Econorrhea?
Come to my arms, my beamish blingrupt!
O unbondaged day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.

‘Twas ponzipaloosa, and the slithy brokerers
Did scofit and fraudit in the Davy Jones Index;
All bankholed were the financial sucktor,
And the drivelatives quantitatively fassets teased.

  1. Hi – I’d like to reprint this poem in the Lewis Carroll Society’s journal “The Knight Letter,” as the members always enjoy a good Jabberwocky parody. Would you put me in touch with the author so I can get his or her permission? Thanks!
