Great ideas Target-Addict! I like the way you think.

I sometimes cut that almost-stale bread into cubes and toss it into any soup. And don't forget about croutons, bread salad (AKA Panzanella), bread soup (pappa al pomodoro) and a stash of breadcrumbs.

Does anyone else have ideas for foods on the edge?

Remember the days when people were complaining about restaurants making the portions too large? Boy that came to a screetching halt.

Excellent tips! On the "Buy only what you need" part, I've actually made it sort of a "game" in our household to try and use up as many perishables as I can without them going to waste. For instance: if I only have a few asparagus stalks left, I toss them in a green salad vs. just tossing them. Or if my french bread is going stale, I use the rest of the loaf for garlic bread vs. wasting it.

Bittman's "How to Cook Everything" and Cook's Illustrated's "Best Recipes" are my go-to cookbooks. I've never had a bad meal out of them.
