Here’s one fresh perspective on this economy, spotted at the Austin, Texas, farmer’s market:
Chocolatier Tom Pedersen is founder of Cocoa Puro and producer of chocolate-covered cocoa beans, one of the most addictive sweet snacks ever bagged. Despite that, his business has taken a hit. “It seems everyone thinks the world is coming to an end so there’s no point in buying chocolate,” Petersen says. “I’d think the opposite would be true.”
Trust me, when you’re crunching through velvety layers of dark, milk and white chocolate to get to the cocoa bean inside, you’ll know what he’s talking about.
“I do wish people would quit worrying about this mess of an economy and get through the stages of grief to recovery,” Pedersen says. Eating more chocolate sounds like a good way to start.
Deep inside, I’m not a fan of chocolate. Actually, I lied. My brother and I stumbled upon a small coffee shop that sold local chocolates, wine, beer, and flowers in Austin, Texas, yesterday. After speaking with the owner, we learned something. It’s not about the products we buy, it’s where we buy it from. She supports local purveyors, and the consumers should support them as well. Pumping money back INTO our own economy, is the only thing that is going to stimulate it. Support your local stores–that’s the solution.
