Signs of the Recession: Retail Propportunity

By Laura Rich ⋅ 11:40 am February 11, 2009 ⋅ 2 comments

proppurtunity 150x150 This is clever: Empty retail space at West 13th Street and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan was Cosi until sometime last summer, became a pop-up store for Ricky’s at Halloween time, and now, while awaiting interested new tenants, its empty windows are used as billboard space, including this full-screen video installment from MTV (on the wall around the corner).

We just might call this a propportinity.

(We put a call in to Robert K. Futterman & Associates to learn more about how often they’re doing this and what their rates are. Will update this post with that info when it comes in.)

  1. My favorite recent propportunity was a controversial exhibit by a street artist during the recent presidential election.

  2. I have recently taken to doing shows in empty prime retail spaces allowing local designers (Atlanta) to feature their products. It has met with huge success. If there are others out there interested in displaying at one of my shows. you need not be there, I do all the selling. Each show has a theme, so you need not be local to participate. Very limited commitment of $100 plus 10% of sales.
