The Unemployed Life

The Cure for Aeron Chair Withdrawal

By Sara Clemence ⋅ 1:28 pm February 9, 2009 ⋅ 9 comments

image aeron 300x224We were barely able to write this post because we’ve been so busy doing Wall Angels. What are Wall Angels? Practically miraculous–and free–posture-picker-uppers, perfect for new freelancers/consultants/other employment-challenged individuals who are hunched over their dining room tables.

Put your back against a wall, pressing your lower spine into it. Your feet are several inches away from the wall, arms up in a bent surrender pose. Keeping your arms against the wall, slowly slide them up towards straight, then back down. Doing 10 is weirdly difficult. But when you step away, you’ll feel like someone is gently tugging your shoulders back. Thanks to Peter Tirschwell for the tip.

Since we’re not trainers, check out the directions at UCLA’s ergonomics office.

  2. Exercise balls make great work chairs, and you can do all sorts of stretching exercises on them while you’re percolating ideas. I can vouch that the burst-proof ones are worth the splurge — they’re still under $25.

  3. Be glad your are rid of those stupid aeron chairs. THEY SUCKS DONKEY NUTS!
Seriously, they are not good chairs they’re just pseudo fancy.
About 8 years ago I bought a Recaro chair for my home office and I’ve never regretted it.

  6. AWESOME… best info ever…
I tried first three excercises on the UCLA site… WOW!!! I had to print it out.. Will be doing these frequently.. I often get a bit stiff sitting too long over a desk. Like good shoes for excecise… a good Chair and good posture is needed while we work…

  8. I purchased a replica of the Aeron Chair from http://www.coolchairz.com for only $220. It is a solid chair with decent comfort and I love it!

  9. Ahhhhhhh…now that feels better! Thanks for the tip. Also, I am a huge fan of the exercise ball alternated with my desk chair. Variety, everything in moderation, etc.
