The New Feel-Good Movie

By Laura Rich ⋅ 10:15 am February 6, 2009 ⋅ 4 comments

image hanoi 150x150It’s Friday after another long week in the recession. Boost your mood with films about these poor suckers who are far worse off than you could possibly be. Consider:

The Fly – You could be half-insect.

The Hanoi Hilton – You could be a P.O.W.

Dead Man Walking – You could be on death row.

In the Name of the Father – You could have been wrongfully stuck in jail for 15 years, during which time your father also served for five until, as you watched, he died.

Cast Away – You could be stuck on an island and not only have no paycheck, but have to talk to a volleyball smeared with blood.

Requiem for a Dream – You really don’t want to go here.

Carrie – You could constantly piss people off by accidentally setting them on fire. Well, or maybe you could view this film as a how-to.

The Wrestler – You could be on the minor leagues wrestling circuit. Yep, that really would be worse.

Gangs of New York – You thought New York was a tough place to do business now?

If you can think of other movies more depressing than your current sitch, leave a comment below.

  1. How depressing was the book Angela’s Ashes? Alright maybe the 1930′s depicts a grand retrospective plight of destitute, depressed, and poverty stricken Irish families. Imagine, living in Limerick and hoping that the English would ask you to serve in war so that you could put more than a lump beef fat on the table to eat. Inspite of severe hardtimes, they still found hope and lived to tell the tale!

  3. How about Christy Brown’s ‘My Left Foot’,
    or
‘Johnny Got His Gun’ as the ultimate feel good books and movies

  4. A few days ago, I saw a movie on TV, “Vigilante”. I wouldn’t like to have been living in the same vicinity as those rogues.

The condition of the community in the movie was extremely disturbing, but I didn’t have to see a movie to realize how blessed I am; neither did I have to search diligently to find a depression
situation. Therefore, I aspire to count my blessings.I reflect on the positive. That helps generate ideas. A great book to read is “Stop Whining, Starting”
