Bloomberg’s No-Rehire Policy in Question

By Laura Rich ⋅ 2:11 pm February 4, 2009 ⋅ 2 comments

logo bloombergIn the media industry, Bloomberg LP is perceived as a sort of Hotel California — once you leave, you can never come back. It’s said to be written into the manual that quitting the company prevents you from ever being rehired there. (We couldn’t procure a copy of that — if anyone wants to send that in, contact us via the Contact page.)

So today’s layoff announcement by the company to cut 60 people in its television and radio units (its first staff reductions ever) seems to present a bit of a pickle, doesn’t it?

UPDATE: A reader writes in with a passage from the 1995 Bloomberg Way manual:

Life is binary. You’re either with us or against us. You either believe in what we say and try to do or you don’t. Make no mistake: Bloomberg Business News isn’t for everyone. Those of us who know what needs to be done will keep trying until we succeed. Many of us have children to feed. It’s that simple and that profound.
