Productive Loafing: Get on Board

Downside: most boards expect/require you donate or raise a certain amount of money each year, though that can be as little as $500
How to Do It: For an organization you’re already involved in, talk to a board member or senior staffer about whether there are any open seats, how members are chosen, and what their requirements are.
If you’re starting from scratch, consider using BoardAssist, a New York-based non-profit that helps match charities with potential board members. They’re to thank for my involvement with Rocking the Boat, and have been featured in the Financial Times and in Portfolio.com’s executive guide to joining the right board. BoardAssist, which works with hundred of or non-profits, will review your resume; discuss your goals, interests, and resources; and connect you to organizations that might be a good fit. The non-profits vet you independently, a process that can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.
That different boards have different needs and different expectations about commitment. Some are happy for you to write a check and attend a meeting every quarter; others want and need your financial, communications, legal, fundraising, or management expertise. They make take up more time, but hey—what else have you got to do besides blow through your savings?
